I teach the step
they missed

Most kids are not bad at math. They lost one step two years ago and everything after it stopped making sense. I find that step and we fix it. I taught in Dysart schools for fourteen years, so I know exactly where the class left them.

01 / How a session runs

One hour, four things,
every time

Sessions are at your kitchen table or on video. I bring the paper and the pencils. Nothing about the hour is improvised.

  1. 01

I read the last two graded tests

Not the homework. Homework gets help at home. A test shows me the exact line where the thinking broke.

  2. 02

We rebuild that one step on paper

We stay on it until your student can work it clean with me quiet. Usually that is twenty minutes. Sometimes it is the whole hour, and that is fine.

  3. 03

We run three problems from this week's unit

So tomorrow's class is review instead of a surprise. This is the part that changes how they walk into the room.

  4. 04

You get two lines before I reach my car

What clicked, what did not, and what we hit next time. No portal, no login, no monthly report. A text.

Marisol got clean on distributing a negative today, she caught two sign errors herself.
Still slow factoring trinomials. We hit that Thursday, no homework needed tonight.

02 / Progress

One student,
one semester

Marisol started ninth grade Algebra 1 with a 58 on her first unit test. Below are all six of her unit tests, August to December. We met twice a week. Nothing else about her schedule changed.

Posted with her mom's written permission, last name left off. This is one student, not an average. Some kids move faster and some take a full year. I will tell you which one I think you have after the first hour.

04 / About

Fourteen years
in the classroom

I taught high school math in the Dysart district for fourteen years. Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and four years running the test prep elective. I left the classroom in 2022 for a simple reason. With thirty four kids in a room I could see who was lost, and I could almost never get to them.

Now I get to. My name is Dan Halvorsen and I still live in Surprise, about a mile from the high school I taught at.
